PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Use 5 May 2006
What would your school do with an extra £10,000?
The possibilities are endless but whatever a boost of an extra £10,000 would bring to your school, SCEMES made it reality for one small primary school in Cornwall.
At the Education Show 2006 one UK school walked away with a £10,000 cash prize - first prize in the SCEMES Education Show Prize Draw. In total, almost £30,000 worth of prizes were shared between 10 schools from all over Britain and one lucky teacher won a brand new Toyota AYGO. The prizes ranged from musical instruments to interactive whiteboards, all useful equipment for any school.
The winning school was St Mark’s C of E Primary in Bude, Cornwall. Head teacher Janette Creber was thrilled:
“What a fantastic surprise! I travelled to the Education Show simply to enjoy the exhibition, and anything I won for school would be a bonus, not dreaming that we would win the £10,000. St Mark's is a small school in Cornwall so has to manage on a tight budget. To win this incredible amount was just wonderful. After consulting with the children and staff we have decided that we would like to spend £500 of it on helping a school in a developing country. We will buy basic classroom equipment and our children will benefit from the giving as well as the children in a developing country from the receiving. For the school we will buy outdoor play equipment. We wanted something ALL the children would benefit from and a good quality adventure playground would be something that could NEVER come out of the ordinary budget. We are very grateful to SCEMES for this opportunity.”
