Communications and Technology

Communication technology can improve the quality of teaching, learning and management in schools and as a result ICT is at the heart of the DCSF’s mission to improve learning for all children.

The use of technology in education has grown exponentially in recent years and now has more applications in UK schools than ever before.

As well as being used for the teaching of ICT, technology can help to facilitate effective administration, planning and management, to disseminate information to pupils, parents and staff and to improve the learning experiences of pupils.

Research shows that technology is an essential tool in improving school effectiveness and providing evidence of pupil progress, and also suggests that it can have a positive impact on student’s engagement and desire to learn.

It is essential, therefore, that school leaders put technology at the heart of their School Improvement Strategies (SIP’s) and invest in ICT equipment in order to achieve positive outcomes for pupils and the entire school.

According to the Harnessing Technology Schools Survey 2007 around two-thirds of primary and secondary schools have embedded their ICT strategy within the whole-school development plan and the majority of schools were planning to invest in their network’s infrastructure in the coming year. The majority of schools also expected expenditure on technology to rise in future years as they improved their technological facilities.
